Boab

Boab 1

We stopped to admire this Boab tree (Adansonia gregorii) in Kings Park recently. Although Boabs do have flowers, they are mainly appreciated for their distinctive bottle-shaped trunk.

Boabs are not native to Perth; they are found in the far north of Australia. This one used to be in the Kimberley region, in the north of Western Australia. It is believed to be about 750 years old and had to be moved to make room for a road bridge. The tree travelled an amazing 3,200km on the back of a truck to come to Perth – claimed to be the longest ever road journey for a tree of this size.
