Beach Spinifex

Beach Spinifex 1

We were walking along the seafront at Woodman Point, on the south side of Perth, recently and noticed these grassy plants covering the sand dunes. Actually you will find them around half the Australian coastline – from Cape Leeuwin in the southwest, up the west coast, and across the Top End to Cape York in the northeast.

They are Beach Spinifex (Spinifex longifolius) and aren’t quite in flower yet, though they do have plenty of buds. The plant shown here is the female, which has a flower head shaped like a spiky ball.
