Dysentery Bush

Dysentery Bush 1

We noticed this shrub with glossy green leaves this morning, in the remnant bushland between Rocky Bay and Harvey Beach in North Fremantle, Western Australia. Actually we have seen it in many parts of Perth recently, including Bold Park and Minim Cove Park, but only found out what it was a few weeks back.

In fact it is Dysentery Bush (Alyxia buxifolia) and was indeed used to treat dysentery in the past. You can distinguish it from other similar looking shrubs by the green berries/fruit (which will eventually turn red) and the small flowers with five white petals and long orange stems.
